Tuscan coast: sandy beaches and medieval villages

Tuscany's Mediterranean coast has vast and beautiful sandy stretches of beach. Just behind the beaches are stretches of splendid pinewoods, vineyards and vast estates. The hilly countryside more inland is known for its picturesque villages where time has stood still. During the last few years the wine district around Castagneto Carducci / Bolgheri has become more popular. The wineries often have a 'cantina' open to the public. The island of Elba, that can be reached by ferry from Piombino, is a true paradise in autumn and spring. Most resorts on the Tuscan coast are small and charming, with excellent facilities and many freely accessible beaches. The properties we have on offer are not too close to the resorts, so as to stay far from the tourist crowds. Cities with cultural treasures like Pisa and Volterra are within easy reach.

  The coastal area Alta Maremma
The area of the Maremma is situated in the south-west of Tuscany. The beautiful low hills of the Alta Maremma form the northern part of this region. Etruscan culture flourished here around 500 BC. Influences from this fascinating culture can still be seen in towns like Massa Marittima, Suvereto, Campiglia, Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri. Because of its gentle hills this area is just perfect for bicycle tours. Beautiful and well-kept beaches can be found at Marina di Castagneto Carducci, San Vincenzo and the Golfo di Baratti.
Between Pisa, Volterra and the coast
The northern region of the Tuscan coast has a typical Tuscan landscape with wooded hills, vast estates and alluring hill towns. Castiglioncella and Cecina are popular beach resorts. Many smaller sea resorts are also rather pleasant. Originally an Etruscan city, Volterra is situated about 30 kilometres inland. This splendid city, on a high plateau, is famous for its locally mined alabaster. Pisa, a charming university town, is of course famous for its Leaning Tower. Although usually packed with tourists, the Campo dei Miarcoli is still a unique sight.
