This region's history dates back to Roman and Etruscan times. Florence is a vast monument to the Renaissance, with the imposing Duomo, the Gothic church of Santa Croce and Italy's greatest art gallery, the Uffizi. Florence still is a leading city in fashion and culture nowadays. The city is just fabulous for shopping and even just window shopping is quite enjoyable. Other cities nearby with their own charming features are Vinci (Leonardo's city), Prato and Greve. The landscape has many different features but is of great beauty everywhere. The region of Florence has both culture and splendid nature, making it a perfect destination for your family holidays.

Florence, Mugello and Rufina
The region north and east of the city of Florence is where the wealth of the De Medici family originated. Fiesole is an ancient town, having been founded in the 7th century BC. The rich past is still tangible in the large villas of the Florentine jet set of foregone times. The wine district of Rufina Pomino is east of the river Sieve and has these characteristic hills, with the Apennines always visible in the background. The area makes for nice walks and is perfect for a holiday with lots of peace and quiet. Rail link to Florence is excellent.

Florence, Chiantigiana, Greve
The city of Florence borders the Chianti region in the south. Road number 222, named the Chiantigiana, provides an excellent scenic route, passing by many wonderful medieval villages. The hilltop farms are a typical feature of this region. It seems as if tourists in this region almost just disappear in the vastness of the countryside. Siena, a little more to the South, can easily be reached.

Florence and western Chianti
South-west of the city of Florence you will find the western Chianti region, wedged between the cities of San Gimignano, Volterra, Pisa and Lucca. Towns like Prato, Certaldo-Alto and San Miniato are maybe a little less known, but no less worth a visit. The landscape is gentle with vast vineyards. This region acquired wealth through their excellent wine. Ancient restored wineries can be found everywhere. This is a splendid region for cycling as well.
