Sicily, island of rich contrasts

No island has played such an important role in Europe's history as the beautiful island of Sicily. On a crossroads in the Mediterranean, Sicily was of great importance for the ancient Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans and later on the Normans. All of these cultures have left behind their cultural legacy. Sicilians are charming and friendly, but proud as well: they are Sicilian foremost, Italian second. Sicily has got it all: vast stretches of sandy beaches, rocky coastline, the active volcano Mount Etna, immense forests in the Madonie nature reserve and an imposing mountainous landscape. Sicily's most agreeable climate with mild springs and autumns makes this beautiful island a perfect destination for your holidays.

  Around mount Etna
Europe's highest (3300 m / 11,000 feet) and still active volcano, Mount Etna is, with 200 craters, a truly stunning sight. Mount Etna has beautifully overgrown spurs as far away as the sea. Excursions to Mount Etna's summit are a spectacular experience. Do take good boots and warm clothes along. The coastline provides wonderful, ancient fishing villages and sandy beaches. Taormina, with its imposing Greek Amphitheatre, is proudly perched on top of a hill overlooking the sea in the distance.
  Baroque Sicily and Siracusa
The south-eastern part of Sicily is a splendid area to explore and enjoy the typical, south-european baroque style. Beautiful cities like Noto, Modica and Ragusa are all in this region. The ancient city of Siracusa, founded by the ancient Greeks and one of the most powerful cities in Europe around the 5th century BC, is of absolutely breathtaking beauty. On the peninsula of Oritigia the legacy of the rich cultural and historical past is apparent everywhere. The coastline has both beautiful sandy beaches and beaches with rocks and pebbles.
  Western and central Sicily
This area has a lot to offer, so many things to see and do. The cities of Agrigento, Piazza Armerina, Segesta and Selinunte are of great historical importance. The cities of Palermo and Trapani are exciting and exotic, but somewhat hectic as well. Monreale has excellent sights of Sicily's Norman architure. The south-western coast and Castellammare del Golfo / Lo Zingaro have excellent beaches. Sicily's interior, with a rougher landscape, has traditional villages where time seems to have stopped a while ago.
Northern Sicily, Cefalù and Golfo di Patti
Sicily's northern part has two beautiful nature reserves: Madonie and Monti Nebrodi. The renowned fishing village of Cefalù has the most beautiful beaches of Sicily. You will also find many remote, sleepy villages in this area. Poised on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Golfo di Patti are the ruins of Tyndaris, one of the last Greek cities to have been founded in Sicily. There is a ferry route connecting this part of Sicily with the Aeolian Islands. These islands, Vulcano and Lipari among others, are extinct, or nearly extinct, volcanoes just off the coast.
