  Urbino and the Adriatic coast
Northern Le Marche is an unspoiled mountainous country, quite different from the countryside in Tuscany or Umbria. Many small towns and villages in the hills have been carefully renovated but still boast their traditional air. Pesaro, where the composer Rossini was born, is on the coast, just like Fano's fishing harbour. The 'velvet beach' of Sinigallia is among the loveliest beaches that can be found here. The painter Raphael was born in the medieval town of Urbino. In Urbino, Italy's most beautiful Renaissance palace was built for the Duke of Montefeltro. Urbino is a wonderful town to explore, boasting several museums and churches with both medieval and Renaissance art.
  Macerata and the Monti Sibillini
More towards Le Marche's southern region, the scenery gets even more remote and quiet. This area is however no less attractive. The hills surrounding Ascoli Picena, the Apennine mountains and the Monti Sibilllini are exceptionally beautiful. The landscape is of an overwhelming beauty, especially in spring and autumn. San Benedetto's sea side beaches are also popular. The village of Macerata has a fabulous and famous annually held opera festival. The Greek and Roman past have been well preserved in this area of Le Marche. Ascoli Picena is a town with a wonderful medieval and Renaissance heritage, still redolent everywhere. And even the older Roman past is still visible in the streets today.
